How to get started and what it takes to master these skills
Getting Started
Entry Point: Start with AWS D1.1 structural welding—it's the entry-level standard. Most welders get certified within first year of training.
First Steps: Complete welding training program. Practice test positions (1G flat, 2G horizontal, 3G vertical, 4G overhead). Schedule certification test through AWS or employer.
Key Insight: Certifications are your resume. Each one opens doors. Many employers require specific certs before you can work.
Prerequisites
- Training: 6+ months welding experience, formal training preferred
- Physical: Pass eye exam, comfortable with test conditions
- Knowledge: Understand welding symbols, procedures, codes
Most tests require: Written exam + practical weld test
Timeline
- 6-12 months: AWS D1.1 structural (entry-level)
- 1-2 years: Multiple process certifications (MIG, TIG, Stick)
- 2-3 years: Specialized certs (pipe, aluminum, stainless)
- 3-5 years: CWI (Certified Welding Inspector) or specialized (aerospace, underwater)
What It Takes
Realistic expectations for time, cost, and equipment
Time Investment
AWS D1.1 Prep: 40-80 hours practice + test
Pipe Welding (6G): 200-400 hours practice
CWI Prep: 80-120 hours study + 6-hour exam
Renewal: Every 3-9 years depending on certification
Costs
AWS Tests: $200-$500 per test (written + practical)
CWI Exam: $1,200-$1,500 (includes study materials)
Practice Materials: $500-$1,000 for test coupons, consumables
Renewal: $50-$200 every 3-9 years
ROI: Each certification adds $2K-$5K to annual salary
Equipment & Tools
- Welding Machine: Same as your process (MIG, TIG, Stick)
- Test Materials: Practice coupons matching test requirements
- Study Materials: AWS code books, practice tests
Note: Many employers pay for certifications and provide test materials.
